من وجهة النظر الاجتماعية , الرياضة تلعب دورا ايجابيا في توحيد الشعوب من خلفيات اجتماعية متنوعة وذلك في تشجيع الفريق المفضل لديهم و مع أن الرياضة توحد الشعوب , يمكن أن تقسمهم , كما يحدث من أعمال شغب بواسطة عنف الجمهور في مباريات كرة القدم .
